"Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains unawakened."

As of October 6, 2008, any citizen wanting a cat trap will be required to pick one up at the Everman Animal Control facility at 3961 Bluebell.  A deposit of $50 is required and will be refunded when the trap is returned.  The traps may be kept for up to one week.  If no traps are available, your name will be put on the waiting list and as soon as one is available, we will call you.  You will then have 24 hours to pick it up, or at least call us, and give the deposit.  This has actually been our policy since the beginning, but we have strayed from it.  We have had a multitude of traps go missing or stolen and are now down to our last two traps.  Animal Services and the Animal Clinic of Forest Hill will be hosting our Annual Rabies Clinic on Saturday, November 22 from 2 pm to 4 pm at the Everman Fire Station.  Call us for prices at 817-561-5495 or go to the city website’s Animal Control page (www.evermantx.net) for details.  There have been several confirmed rabies cases in our area, so we really need to have our pets vaccinated for not only their safety, but our own as well.  You will also be able to get city tags for a price of $4.00.  These tags are good for a full year and will need to be reissued annually.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  Citations will be issued for no rabies vaccination and no city tags after the rabies clinic.  Per state law, all pets are required to be vaccinated (Health and Safety Code 826-Rabies Control Act).

On a more personal note, I would like to thank Summer and Charles Griffin, Betty Griffin, Edith Wantz, Justin Stanfield and Robin Dumas for volunteering their time helping at the shelter and setting us up on Craig’s List and MySpace.  Many animals have found great homes due to their efforts.  Also thanks to Council Member Denise Douglass and Eddie Osborne for creating the “Friends of the Everman Animal Shelter” and hosting Adopt-a-Pet each Saturday.  F.E.A.S. raises money and gets equipment donated to our shelter and Adopt-a-Pet is a great program that finds our animals long lasting homes and families.  If our animals could speak they would say “Thank you and I love you!”.  Please contact Animal Services for volunteering opportunities and information about “Friends of the Everman Animal Shelter”.

A dog may NOT be tied outside under any of the following conditions:

CREATING A HEALTH HAZARD

Any person who shall harbor or keep on their premises or in or about a premises under their control, any dog, cat or pet animal, and who shall allow their premises to become a hazard to the general health and welfare of the community or who shall allow their premises to give off noxious or offensive odors due to the activity or presence of such animals shall be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.

ABANDONMENT OF ANIMALS

It shall be unlawful to leave any animal in a place without proper food, water and shelter for any period of time.  Any person who might leave an animal at a City Animal Shelter when no animal control staff is present shall be guilty of a Class C misdemeanor.

ANIMALS AT LARGE

It shall be unlawful for any person who owns a dog or cat to allow their animals to run at large at any time.  Owners must keep their animals within an enclosed area at all times to ensure their safety and well being, as well as the safety and well being of others around them.

RABIES OUTBREAK EXPANDING

The City of Arlington has recently confirmed an increasing number of rabies cases in their city.  Tarrant County Animal Services reports that the number of rabies cases this year have increased and are encouraging all pet owners to have their pets vaccinated against rabies as soon as possible.  In some instances, the rabies has been traced back to local bat colonies living in the area.  For more information regarding rabies and how to get the shots, contact City of Everman Animal Services at 817/561-5495.

It’s that time of year again when puppies and kittens are everywhere!  Please remember, when they are babies they are cute and SMALL.  Our furry friends grow to be not as cute and much larger!  Make sure if you choose to be a pet owner, you are ready for the responsibility.  We have laws and ordinances that help keep our pets safe and healthy and our citizens safe.  Make sure you know these before you take that step to owning a new pet.  Many of the animal laws changed last year in September, so if you have any questions or are unsure, please check with the shelter.  I would be happy to answer any questions.  One problem I encounter on a daily basis is poor containment of pets.  If you own your home or are renting and choose to have a pet, you are the one responsible for maintaining the fence or pen where it is kept.  All pets must be registered with the shelter.  The limit of animals per household in our city is four (that’s four total pets).  Cats, just like dogs, must be kept in a fenced yard and not allowed to wander.  Outside they must be kept on a leash.  If your yard does not have a fence, there are other options.  Kennels or runs are great for both dogs and cats.  A trolley system may also be used.  Chaining a dog up is no longer an option!  Please remember, all outdoor pets must have proper shelter and water at ALL times!

We can always use volunteers to give the pets attention.  Old rugs, towels, and toys are appreciated.  Are you a responsible pet owner?  If not…why?

New outdoor cages at the animal shelter!

VOLUNTEERS WANTED!
“I live at the shelter.  I am fuzzy and warm with a wet nose.  If you have extra time and love animals, I need you.  You say you don’t really want to spend time at the shelter?  How about taking me home for a day to foster.  This is also a great way to find out if I might be that special pet that would make a great addition to your family!  I love your old stuffed toys, blankets, towels or sheets.  Sometimes you may no longer have your fuzzy friends at home and don’t know what to do with their things.  Well…I could use their old house, kennel or dog bed!  I always need food and water bowls, leashes and collars.  Please come visit me and bring me a treat when you come!”

Our whiskered friends at the shelter could really use some TLC, including volunteers willing to sew cage comforters.  These pads would provide much needed comfort to our adoptable animals while they wait for a new home. These would go home with the pet, giving it something familiar in a new and strange environment!  Please consider making one or more of these very simple to make comforters.  If you would rather crochet, “kitty balls” or “mousies” would also be appreciated.  You can pick up instructions at City Hall from the Administrative Secretary.  And please keep in mind, any donations of food, toys, blankets, rugs, etc. are ALWAYS appreciated and much needed!  Hope you visit the shelter soon and see the recently built outdoor pens!

Thomas Newsome, ACO Officer
