Meet
Mayor Jim Stephenson
Mayor Stephenson has been a resident of Everman most of his
life. He was raised just south of Everman and attended what
is now Hommel Elementary School. His parents sold the farm
and moved to the city, where he finished school. After attending
Arlington State College (U.T.A.), he served in the U.S. Navy.
After completing his military duty, he returned home and
married his high school sweetheart, Beverly. They have three
children, ten grandchildren, and two greatgrandchildren. The
couple has resided in Everman since 1960.
Jim has always been a conservative thinker and had an interest
in government, but found it difficult to find time to get
involved. After retiring from the Postal Service, he finally
found that time and began serving the community, first on
the Parks and Recreation Board, then as a city council member,
finally being elected as mayor.
We have achieved a number of goals in the past five years;
we have built a new police station, a new animal control shelter,
and a new library. We have gone from a zero bond rating to
the very best that a city of our size can have. Our administrative
staff has been reorganized with a new city manager, city secretary,
finance director, and a public works director. We have lowered
our tax rate each year for the past five years. The one goal
that has been elusive is development. Everman is land locked
and cannot expand. We do have two hundred acres that could
be developed, but this land has no access to it. I have been
working on developing a road along the old railroad right
of way and the County has become involved in this. Funds are
very difficult to find and completion of this project is still
a long way off.
I have enjoyed serving my community and look forward to the
future, as Everman is a great place to live!
