Let me start by saying this has been a very hot summer! For
those of us with pets that live outdoors, we need to be aware
of our animal?s needs more than usual. All of our pets need
to have water available at all times in this heat and shelter
to escape the sun. This is not an option, this is the law!
Think of how you would feel if you were outside in this heat
without water or a place to hide from the sun. If it is possible,
change the water more than once. It gets hot and stagnant!
Fleas and ticks are really bad this time of year also. Please
protect your pets. It is normal for dogs to scratch and chew;
however if they scratch until their skin is raw and sore,
there is a good chance they have a hot spot. Hot spots are
caused by an allergic reaction to fleas. It is a circular
patch of raw or red skin that is caused from licking and chewing.
It is very painful to the animal. Clipping the area around
the hot spot will help it dry quicker. Most hot spots can
be treated at home with a powder or astringent. If the spot
persists, please see a vet.
Please remember?the shelter is a great place to find that
new companion. We have many wonderful dogs and cats that need
homes with love. Many of these have been at the shelter for
quite a long time and are longing for that special person
to welcome them into their home. Our shelter is always needing
your old cages and kennels. We also like old towels and blankets.
If you or a neighbor loses an animal, please check out the
shelter. Please remember our friends out of doors in the weather!
